Davenport Paddle Surf Classic 2010 – Wrap-up

I can honestly say that Davenport 2010 exceeded my expectations. We had a strong turn-out, and the competitiors were greeted by warm sunny days, mostly calm winds, and waves that were super fun. Some big sets rolled through, but for most of the weekend we had had consistent head high waves. Big enough to be fun, not so big as to be scary. The level of surfing in every category was outstanding. We had some very high scoring heats, and many heats where the score separating 1st and 4th was only a couple of points.   A fun, very competitive contest.

I’ve posted some photos here, and if you’ve got more, please share:

Congratulations to all the competitors.    A special shout-out to Matt Hoff and Mark Alfaro.  I want to encourage more first time competitors, and had special prices for the 1st time competitors that finished highest.    Matt got A $250 gift certificate from Murky Waters Kayaks,  and Mark got a sick carbon fiber stand up paddle courtesy of Covewater Paddle Surf Shop in Santa Cruz. Never competed before?  Next year it could be you!

A big thanks to John Hartwich for managing all the timing and scoring, and the judges for judging well. Thanks to volunteers like Corki, James and others for helping the contest run smoothly.

A huge thank you to Covewater Paddle Surf in Santa Cruz for their extremely strong support of the Classic! Covewater, Headquarters of stand up paddle Monterey Bay and stand up paddle San Francsico Bay Area donated a full-carbon paddle to the winner of the SUP division! In addition, they donated hats to top SUP finishers and supplied the keg of Dos Equis Amber for the dinner on Saturday night. When it comes to stand up paddle Santa Cruz, be it flat water, SUP racing or SUP surfing, Covewater is the leader and we’re are stoked to have them on board!  They’ve also already stepped up to support the 2011 contest.
